Evaluating the accuracy of light and color across instrument panels is a challenge compounded by several factors. The number of indicators, the varying location of symbols, and the range of colors on a backlit display prove complex for automated inspection systems and human inspectors alike.
Using light measurement software, the most common method for achieving complete panel characterization has been to draw static points-of-interest (POI) windows around each of the illuminated symbols within a captured image to define areas for measurement. These areas are measured independently for light and color accuracy, and then compared for cross-symbol uniformity. However, the setup process for this static POI measurement method is increasingly time-consuming based on the number of symbols and symbol types on a panel. In addition, if the panel under test shifts during measurement, or changes (such as a new batch of panels on a production line), symbols may fall out of the boundaries of the static POI measurement windows defined in the software. The challenge calls for a more adaptive solution.
