Vehicles are more illuminated than ever before. Adaptive headlamps guide our way in changing light and weather conditions, head-up displays (HUDs) provide real-time information about our surroundings, and infotainment displays connect us to the outside world. A vehicle's safety and perceived quality are increasingly contingent on the quality of light, which must be measured to control the precise and meaningful variations in brightness and color that enable operation. While standard machine vision systems can evaluate images for limited pixel-level contrast variations to detect defects, variations of light and color as perceived by humans are much too delicate for standard 2D imaging.
